From the Depths My Prayer Ascendeth

From the depths my prayer ascendeth
Unto God on high;
Hear, O Lord, my supplication
And my cry.

None can stand unscathed and blameless
In Thy judgment just,
But the contrite in Thy mercy
Humbly trust.

Lord, my hope is in Thy promise,
And I wait for Thee
More than they who watch for morning,
Light to see.

With the Lord is tender mercy,
And redeeming love;
Israel, look for full salvation
From above.

This is a metrical paraphrase of Psalm 130 (De Profundis). No specific author is credited in common hymnals or sources; it appears in 19th- and 20th-century collections (e.g., The Hymnal 1940) as an anonymous or traditional text, sometimes paired with a tune by Lowell Mason or others. Not to be confused with the more famous 'Out of the Depths I Cry to Thee' by Martin Luther.
