This hymn is also known as "Tenderly the Shepherd." It is one of the many gospel song texts written by Fanny Crosby (Frances Jane Crosby, 1820–1915). The lyrics reference the three parables in Luke 15 (lost sheep, lost coin, prodigal son). Some hymnals list the date around 1910; a few sources attribute the music (not asked here) to William J. Kirkpatrick.
